Varenicline is a prescription medicine to help adults stop smoking.

How do I take varenicline?
- Choose a quit date when you will stop smoking.
- Start taking varenicline 1 week (7 days) before your quit date. This lets varenicline build up in your body. You can keep smoking during this time. Make sure that you try and stop smoking on your quit date. If you slip, try again.
- Take varenicline after eating and with a full glass (8 ounces) of water.
- Most people will keep taking varenicline for up to 12 weeks. If you have completely quit smoking by 12 weeks, ask your doctor if another 12 weeks. Varenicline may help you stay cigarette-free.
- Varenicline comes as a 0.5 mg tablet and a1 mg tablet. See the chart below for dosing instructions:

What should I tell my doctor before starting varenicline?
Tell your doctor about all of your medical conditions including if you:
- have kidney problems or get kidney dialysis. Your doctor may prescribe a lower dose of varenicline for you
- Tell your doctor about all your other medicines including prescription and nonprescription medicines, vitamins and herbal supplements. Especially, tell your doctor if you take:
Insulin
Asthma medicines
Blood thinners
When you stop smoking, there may be a change in how these and other medicines work for you.
- are pregnant, become pregnant or are breast-feeding
- have mental health conditions such as depression, thoughts of suicide or self-harm
- have heart and blood vessel problems
- are using alcohol
Who should not take Varenicline?
- Varenicline has not been studied in children under 18 years of age. Varenicline is not recommended for children under 18 years of age.
- Do not take varenicline if you have an allergy to any medicine containing varenicline tartrate or any of the ingredients in this medicine. Some of the symptoms of an allergic reaction may include:
Shortness of breath, wheezing or difficulty breathing
Swelling of the face, lips, tongue or other parts of the body
Rash, itching or hives on the skin
Tell your doctor immediately if you or your family/friends:
- Notice changes in behaviour, thinking, or mood that are not typical for you, or you develop suicidal thoughts or actions, anxiety, panic, aggression, anger, hallucinations
Warnings and Precautions
- Take varenicline exactly as directed. Do not take more or less of it or take it more often than prescribed by your doctor.
- If you miss a dose, take it as soon as you remember. If it is close to the time for your next dose, wait. Just take your next regular dose.
- Be careful driving or operating machinery until you know how varenicline affects you. varenicline may cause dizziness and sleepiness in some people. If you have any of these symptoms, do not drive, operate machinery or do anything else that could be dangerous.
- Avoid drinking alcohol while you are taking this medicine.
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Varenicline has not been studied in pregnant women. It is not known if varenicline will harm your unborn baby. It is best to stop smoking before you get pregnant.
- Although it was not studied, varenicline may pass into breast milk. You and your doctor should discuss alternative ways to feed your baby if you take varenicline.
Side Effects
Tell your doctor as soon as possible if you notice any of the following:
- Nausea, sleep problems and sleepiness, vomiting, constipation, Psychological problems, anxiety, depression, suicidal thoughts
- Chest pain or pressure, pain feeling in your neck, hands, back or stomach
- Signs of an allergic reaction, like rash; hives; itching; red, swollen, blistered, or peeling skin
Storage
- Store below 30°C
- Keep this medicine out of the sight and reach of children.
- Do not use this medicine after the expiry date which is stated on the card packaging or carton after EXP. The expiry date refers to the last day of that month.
